The cable is the medium through which information moves from one network device to another. There are different types of network cabling like optical fiber cable, twisted pair cables, and coaxial cable. What kind of network cabling will be used depends on the network’s topology and size. A variety of technologies are used for network connections. The devices that need network cabling are servers, phones, printers, VOIP systems, and computers.
Types Of Networking Cables:
Fiber Optics- in this type of network cabling, a center glass core is surrounded by a layer of protection tube below with plastic layer. Copper is cheaper than optical fiber, but longer distances can be covered with optical fiber cabling. Two categories of fiber optics are multi-mode fiber and single-mode fiber.
Patch- this is an electronic network cable that connects one electronic device to another for signal routing. The patch cable is comparatively shorter and more flexible. They are available in different colors.
Coaxial- coaxial network cabling is generally used for televisions and broadbands. They are easier to handle because they capture the electromagnetic wave inside the cable. They can be bent and twisted, flexible without causing any electrical hazards. Although they are difficult to install, they are highly resistant to signal interference. Coaxial network cabling comes in two variants. Thin coaxial cable also referred to as thinned and thick coaxial cable also known as thicket. Thick coaxial is difficult to bend and install.
Power Lines-power line communication or PLC allows these wires to be used for interconnecting home computers or other networking products.
Unshielded Twisted Pair Connector (UTP)- this network cabling uses an RJ-45 connector. It looks like a telephone connector and has a plastic body covering. The full form of RJ is Registered Jack. This network cable should be kept away from electric motors or fluorescent lights because it may be susceptible to radio and electrical frequency interferences. The plus point of UTP is that it is the least expensive.
Shielded Twisted Pair Connector (STP)- STP network cabling can be used in electrically susceptible places. STP comes in three variants:
Each pair of wires is individually covered with foil.
The jacket covering all wires has a foil or braid shield.
Each pair, as well as the entire group of wires, are shielded.
Guidelines For Installing Network Cable:
You can use the twisted-pair cable in lengths of 50 feet, 75 feet or 100 feet.
During installation, avoid electrical interferences such as big motors, fluorescent lights or x-ray machines.
Be careful while installation. Make sure no one is around to trips and falls over a cable running over floors.
Label each cable at both ends when running cables through walls.
Use plastic cable ties to tie several cables together.
Always keep more cable than you need.
The maximum length of cable between the hub and the computer should be 100 meters.
